Ranking the Years: 80 through 89
The ninth decade of the 20th century which began on January 1, 1980 and ended on December 31, 1989 is known as “the Nineteen Eighties” and “the Eighties.” The 80s was not for just the “girls who wanted to have fun” but for everyone. The 80s was considered as the new age of big fun years.
The 80s pioneered video game systems, TV music channels playing new wave, heavy metal, hip hop, funky and pop rock music with performers and background dancers all with the new Dolby sound. People started buying VCRs and renting movies from newly introduced movie rental stores for home entertainment. The 80s swept the exercise mania with women in body suits and leg warmers exercising to lose weight and men jogging in track suits wearing earphones attached to portable am/fm radios.
In the 80s, movies and arcade games were two of the most popular forms of entertainment for all ages. Teenagers spent time hanging out at home to watch the most popular blockbuster hits on VCR and hanging at the malls playing arcade games and practicing the latest dance. Comedy clubs, stand-up comedians and a new generation of family-oriented television sitcoms were popular during this era. This kept families at home on the weekends, enjoying each other and laughing “in stitches” together.
The business era of the 80s brought forth the young “uppity” professionals called the “yuppies”. These were the wealthy men and women who were career-minded ambitious. These men and women climbed the corporate ladder in business suits and attended business lunches. “Power” was the slogan for these young professionals.
The years of 1980 through 1989 introduced a big and memorable decade that will never be forgotten. The 80s will always replay in our minds and hold a special appreciation for change in our hearts.
